Temporary Protected Status

Temporary protected status (TPS) is a temporary nonimmigrant benefit under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) for certain nationals of a foreign country designated by the Attorney General.

TPS Offers Short-Term Reprieve for Certain Foreign Nationals Currently in the U.S.

Examples of circumstances occurring in a foreign country that can occur for an Attorney General to designate a country under the TPS program include, but are not limited to, armed conflict, natural disaster or outbreak of a highly contagious disease.

The TPS program can offer certain foreign nationals a temporary reprieve from deportation and the ability to work here legally. It may also provide travel authorization to exit the U.S. and return during the validity period of advance parole.

For an up-to-date list of countries currently designated under the TPS program, please visit the TPS page at USCIS.gov.
